Differing notes in the same cord

Trying to get a whole note with traveling quarters underneath. If I put the quarters in and add the whole note above, the program changes the whole measure to a cord of whole notes. If I put the whole note in and add the quarters underneath, it changes my whole to a quarter. How to stop?

    Hi AGibbens,

    Could you attach an image illustrating the issue? 

    As a general reminder, make sure you're in the correct mode when adding new notes (Pencil/Add mode). If you are working with multiple voices, make sure that you have switched to the 2nd voice before adding the lower notes.

    Attached is the measures I am trying to recreate. I need to rewrite part of this piece for new lyrics. While I could have gone SATB, I also need the piano score (what I am trying to write) to accompany. Suggestions?image
