Drum Notation

Hi-

One feature request for drums:

Could you please add the ability to change note heads so we can properly write out hi hat, cross stick and cymbal parts?

One bug fix:

The standard snare drum line on the stave plays a tom tom sound when you press play to listen to your score. Could you please fix it so the snare drum line plays the snare sound?

Love the app!

Look forward to the next update.

Cheers.

  • Hi JC,

Sorry for the delayed response. These notations are very important. It's a shame we haven't got to them yet. They will be out in the next 1-2 updates, around a month.

By the way, which ledger line is the issue? We will have to do more accurate research on standard drum notation.

    Thanks
    Phil
  • Phil,

Take a look at this link. It should help you undrstand common drum notation.

  • Please, please, please support proper drum notation! I have turned my teacher onto the iPad as a music tool, and this is the only thing really stopping us from using the iPad as a serious notation tool.
  • Most definitely. Expect an update in a week or so.

    Thanks,
    Phil
  • According to the 1.3 release notes, "Improved Drum Kit notation" is listed as a new feature. I am not sure what is improved about the drum notation, but I can't seem to get any of the cymbal notations to show up correctly.

The site referenced by musicman_944 should be followed:

  • In 1.3 we fixed the drum set notation in order to match sibelius http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sibelius_drum_legend.png.

There are some small differences, from http://www.freedrumlessons.com/drum-lessons/reading-drum-notation.php. For example, snare is on high C, instead of high B. This seems to be more standard. Let me know if you think anything should be changed.
  • Just started working with this app... Love it! Just wondering about the hi hat and cymbal notation... I've figured out how to use the different voices to get the stems to go the correct direction, but are the cymbal notations updated as of yet? I feel like after reading this thread I may be doing something wrong. Hats are still a normal note head.

I plan on getting my students with to buy this app once i see this works

Been reading and writing drum music for 20+ yrs and I prefer the snare on the c space where you have it, if it's any consolation. Keep up the great work!

Why the $%$$ can't you guys use the standard GM Drum kit lay out so all software can understand your (Syblis Huh?) layout. It's a waste of time to rebuild every drum track that comes out of Symphony Pro! Get with it.  What is it just too hard for you? I know you won't reply to this you never do or if you do it's rare! Too busy spending our money?

  • I would like to eat some crow for thanksgiving. I am sorry for the frustrated comments I stated above. I can work with the drum layout as it is. Ignore the ravings of an old man.
