Using Music Keyboard Without Inserting Notes

While viewing a score, can I play the music keyboard without notes being input into the score? Is there a way to disable this, while still being able to use the keyboard?

    Yes, you can do this by toggling off/unhighlighting the Select or Write Mode icon - which is either the cursor or pencil icon. i.e.:
